Camping out on Thacher Island

Thacher Island is a fun place to get away from it all for an overnight camping experience.  The island has twin lighthouses, a small museum with a video describing the history of the island, a campground, rocky coves, paths to explore, a solar-powered outhouse, and even a graveyard to visit in the wee hours of the morning if you are so inclined...
What to bring - You'll need some basic camping gear - and please remember to pack as compactly as possible, as you'll carry your gear out to the island in or on your kayak.  If traveling with a group, you might need to carry some group food and gear in addition to your own.
  • bug repellent, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
  • water bottles and water (there is no fresh water available on the island)
  • tent and groundcloth
  • sleeping bag – we recommend a down or polyfill bag that packs compactly
  • clothing appropriate for paddling and overnight camping -  bathing suit, shorts, sandals, fleece, raingear - place your sleeping bag, clothes, and gear in drybags or in a duffel or daypack placed in a plastic bag - kayak bulkheads are often not totally water-tight
  • bowl, cup, knife, spoon, fork
  • camping stove and fuel.  The island does not allow open fires.
  • enough food for dinner and breakfast and snacks.  Please use soft-sided coolers only, please!
Please be aware that this is a "basic" camping experience - the island has no running water or electricity  (but there is an environmentally- friendly solar powered composting toilet).  The level grassy campground has a large covered pavilion to provide campers with sun and rain protection, and several picnic tables.

Further details available on from Thacher Island Association .
PLEASE BE PARKED AND AT THE SHOP, READY TO PACK YOUR GEAR
NO LATER THAN 2:15 p
